Sir Harold Jeffreys was an English mathematician, statistician and geophysicist, born in 1891 in Fatfield, County Durham, and died in 1989 in Cambridge. Using observations of Earth's bodily tides, he gave in 1926 the first quantitative estimate of the rigidity of Earth's core and was the first to demonstrate that the core is largely molten. With Keith Bullen he compiled the Jeffreys-Bullen tables of the 1930s giving the travel times of earthquake waves through Earth's interior, which became the international standard used to locate earthquake epicenters for decades.
