Hans Cloos

Hans Cloos was a German geologist, born in 1885 in Magdeburg and died in 1951 in Bonn. After early fieldwork in Indonesia and Namibia, he became professor of geology at the University of Breslau in 1919, where he developed the field known as granite tectonics, reconstructing how a body of molten rock rose and solidified from the internal structural patterns left in the resulting granite. He was one of the first geologists to build true scale physical models to study the mechanics of faulting, and his 1947 book Conversation with the Earth became a widely read popular account of geology.
