Gustav Tschermak von Seysenegg was an Austrian mineralogist, born in 1836 in Litovel, Moravia, and died in 1927 in Vienna. He studied at the University of Vienna before earning his doctorate in mineralogy at Heidelberg and Tubingen, later serving as director of the Imperial Mineralogical Cabinet from 1868 to 1877 and as professor of petrography at the University of Vienna. He is known for his work on the classification of meteorites, and he became a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1882 and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1905.
