Gunter Faure

Gunter Faure was a Canadian-American geochemist of Estonian origin, born in 1934 and died in 2025, who spent his career on the earth sciences faculty at Ohio State University after earning his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1961. He became known chiefly as an educator through a series of widely used textbooks, including Principles of Isotope Geology, which set out the theory and application of radiometric dating and isotope tracers for generations of geology students, alongside companion volumes on inorganic geochemistry and the geology of the terrestrial planets. His textbooks remained standard graduate references in isotope geochemistry for decades after their first editions.
