Gillian Rose Foulger is a British geologist and academic, born in 1952 in Ipswich, who serves as Professor of Geophysics at Durham University. She has played a major role in coordinating the global debate within earth science over whether deep mantle thermal plumes exist and produce hot spot volcanism, challenging the mantle plume hypothesis and proposing alternative models grounded in plate theory. She led research identifying what has been called Icelandia, a submerged continental formation extending from Greenland toward Europe, reported in 2021.
