Gilbert Walker

Sir Gilbert Thomas Walker was an English physicist and statistician, born in 1868 in Rochdale, Lancashire, and died in 1958 in Coulsdon, Surrey. While working on Indian monsoon prediction he published the first description of the great seesaw of atmospheric pressure between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, later named the Southern Oscillation, and the associated atmospheric circulation pattern now called the Walker circulation. With Udny Yule he also developed the Yule-Walker equations, a time series analysis method that remains foundational to statistical forecasting.
