British geologist (1906-1990) known for pioneering work on the Quaternary period in Britain and for a notable wartime contribution: during the Second World War he used geological analysis of the beaches of Normandy to help Allied commanders identify the best landing sites for D-Day, and later guided water-supply development in Egypt and North Africa. After the war he held the Sorby professorship at Sheffield and then the Lapworth chair of geology at the University of Birmingham from 1949 to 1974, also serving as vice-principal there. He received the Prestwich Medal in 1954 and was appointed MBE for his wartime geological work.
