Florence Bascom was an American geologist and educator, born in 1862 and died in 1945, both in Williamstown, Massachusetts. She was the second woman to earn a doctorate in geology in the United States, receiving hers from Johns Hopkins University in 1893 as the first woman to earn a doctorate there in any field, and in 1896 she became the first woman to work for the United States Geological Survey. She also founded the department of geology at Bryn Mawr College, where she trained many of the leading women geologists of her generation.
