Emil Johann Wiechert was a German physicist and geophysicist who made lasting contributions to both fields. He presented the first verifiable model of the Earth's layered internal structure, and was among the first scientists to discover the electron. He went on to become the world's first professor of geophysics, at the University of Gottingen.
