Dan Peter McKenzie is an English geophysicist, born in 1942 in Cheltenham, England. With Robert Parker he published in 1967 one of the founding papers of plate tectonics, working out the mathematical principles describing how rigid plates move on the surface of a sphere, and his subsequent research on mantle convection shaped modern understanding of how the layered mantle drives plate motion. A longtime professor of geophysics at the University of Cambridge, he has also extended plate tectonic and mantle convection theory to the study of Venus and Mars.
