Claude Lorius was a French glaciologist, born in 1932 in Besancon and died in 2023, who spent his career at the CNRS Laboratory of Glaciology and Environmental Geophysics. Over twenty two Antarctic and Arctic expeditions spanning six decades, he pioneered the analysis of air bubbles trapped in ancient glacier ice to reconstruct past atmospheric composition, and in 1987 his team's analysis of the Soviet Vostok ice core in Antarctica extended the climate record back 160,000 years, demonstrating for the first time that atmospheric carbon dioxide and temperature had risen and fallen together through past glacial and interglacial cycles.
