Charles Vernon Theis

Charles Vernon Theis, known as C. V. Theis, was an American hydrogeologist, born in 1900 in Newport, Kentucky, and died in 1987. Working on aquifers in the High Plains between 1932 and 1934, he developed new mathematical equations describing nonequilibrium groundwater flow toward a pumped well, a result known as the Theis solution that remains a foundational tool in aquifer analysis into the twenty first century. His later research showed that the share of groundwater withdrawals drawn from storage depletion tends to decrease over time while the share drawn from stream capture increases, and he received the Robert E. Horton Medal in 1984.
