American geologist (1875-1956) who led the University of Wisconsin geology department for thirty years and served as president of the Geological Society of America in 1933. His research centered on the geology and iron-ore deposits of the Lake Superior region, especially the Mesabi Range, and he wrote influential works on structural, metamorphic and economic geology. He received the Penrose Medal, the highest award in the geosciences, in 1942. A general profile of the same person is also carried in the science atlas.
