American geologist, artist and Episcopal minister (1844-1917) who documented his geological and paleontological fieldwork in detailed sketches and watercolors. Working in Colorado in the 1870s he discovered dinosaur fossils, including early specimens of Stegosaurus, Apatosaurus, Camptosaurus and Allosaurus, and his broader survey work helped chart the geology of Colorado and guide mineral exploration there. He later taught at the Colorado School of Mines and contributed to the United States Geological Survey.
