Arthur Holmes was an English geologist who made two major contributions to the understanding of geology. He pioneered the use of radiometric dating of minerals, giving earth scientists the first reliable way to fix the age of rocks, and he was the first earth scientist to grasp the mechanical and thermal implications of convection within the mantle, an insight that helped drive the eventual acceptance of plate tectonics.
