Welsh geologist and paleobiologist (1921-2004) recognized internationally for his research on brachiopods. He held the chair of geology at Queen's University Belfast from 1954 to 1974 and the Lapworth chair of geology at the University of Birmingham from 1974 to 1976, before serving as principal of the University of Glasgow from 1976 to 1988, where he expanded the university's use of computing technology. He was knighted in 1983 and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
