British-Australian geologist (1868-1937) whose fieldwork across Africa led to a series of major mineral discoveries: coal deposits in Nigeria in 1909, bauxite in the Atewa Range and manganese ore in the Gold Coast in 1914, and diamonds along the Birim River in the Gold Coast in 1919. He also recommended the Volta River site later used for the Akosombo Dam, and was awarded the Lyell Medal by the Geological Society of London in 1927 for his contributions to economic geology.
