British geologist and Anglican priest, one of the founders of modern geology. Working from Welsh rock strata, he proposed the Cambrian period of the geological timescale in 1835, in a joint publication in which Roderick Murchison also proposed the Silurian period, and in 1840 the two collaborated again to propose the Devonian period, resolving what became known as the Great Devonian Controversy over rocks near the Silurian-Carboniferous boundary.
