Tule fog is a thick ground fog that settles over California's San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys, forming from late fall through early spring after the first substantial rainfall, officially between November 1 and March 31. It takes its name from the tule grass wetlands of the Central Valley, and as of 2005 was the leading cause of weather-related traffic accidents in California.
