Also called the end-Triassic extinction, occurring about 201.4 million years ago at the boundary between the Triassic and Jurassic periods. Roughly 23 to 34 percent of marine genera and an estimated 42 percent of terrestrial tetrapods disappeared, generally attributed to extensive volcanic eruptions in the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province, which released large amounts of carbon dioxide and drove global warming, ocean acidification and increased wildfire activity. The extinction cleared ecological space that allowed dinosaurs to rise to dominance through the following Jurassic period.
