Shiranui is an atmospheric ghost light told of in Kyushu, Japan, traditionally said to appear on certain calendar days, called kaijitsu, in the seventh month of the lunisolar Japanese calendar when the wind is weak, over the Yatsushiro Sea and the Ariake Sea. The phenomenon persists into the present day, and it has been determined to be an atmospheric optical phenomenon.
