Haze is an atmospheric phenomenon in which dust, smoke and other dry particulates suspended in the air reduce visibility and obscure the clarity of the sky, distinguished by the World Meteorological Organization from fog and mist. It typically forms in dry conditions, unlike mist which needs saturated humid air, though haze particles can act as condensation nuclei and produce wet haze when vapor condenses around them. Its sources include farming practices such as stubble burning and dry-weather ploughing, vehicle and industrial emissions, wind-blown dust, volcanic activity and wildfires; wet haze commonly forms when sulfur dioxide from combustion converts into fine sulfuric acid droplets, a reaction intensified by sunlight, high humidity and stagnant air, making haze mostly a warm-season phenomenon.
