A dust storm, also called a sandstorm, is a meteorological phenomenon common in arid and semi-arid regions, arising when a gust front or other strong wind blows loose sand and dirt from a dry surface; fine particles are carried by saltation and suspension, moving soil from one place and depositing it in another. Dust storms can sharply reduce visibility and disrupt transportation, and repeated storms over time can contribute to desertification.
