A Bishop's Ring is a diffuse brown or bluish halo observed around the sun, typically appearing in the aftermath of a large volcanic eruption that has injected fine ash and aerosols into the upper atmosphere. The first recorded observation was made by the Reverend Sereno Edwards Bishop of Honolulu following the eruption of Krakatoa on August 27, 1883.
