The Arctic ice pack is the sea ice cover of the Arctic Ocean and its surrounding waters. It follows a seasonal cycle in which the ice melts through the warmer months, reaching its minimum extent around mid September, before rebuilding through autumn and winter. A portion of the Arctic basin's sea ice persists as multi year ice that survives from one year to the next, with the oldest ice reaching several meters thick in places, though the overall pack has shown a documented declining trend in extent over recent decades.
