The 1912 eruption of Novarupta, on the Alaska Peninsula in what is now Katmai National Park and Preserve, was the largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. It released about 30 times the volume of magma later expelled by the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, forming the vent now known as Novarupta on the slope of Trident Volcano.
