Petrology

Processes studied under petrology, the atlas's discipline for the origin, composition and classification of rock. Includes Metamorphism, the transformation of existing rock into a new mineral and textural form through heat and pressure without full melting. Belongs here: a process whose primary discipline is the transformation of rock through heat, pressure or chemical change. Does not belong here: a process that forms new sediment or lithifies loose material into rock (Sedimentology), or the broader structural deformation that often accompanies metamorphism (Geology).
