Soapstone, also known as steatite or soaprock, is a talc-schist, a type of metamorphic rock composed largely of the magnesium-rich mineral talc. It is produced by dynamothermal metamorphism and metasomatism in subduction zones, where heat, pressure and an influx of fluids change existing rock without melting it.
