Serpentinite is a metamorphic rock composed predominantly of serpentine group minerals, formed by serpentinization of mafic or ultramafic rock. It forms when mafic rock is hydrated by carbon-dioxide-deficient sea water pressed into the rock at great depth, at mid-ocean ridges and in the forearc mantle of subduction zones.
