Scoria, also called volcanic cinder, is a pyroclastic, highly vesicular, dark-colored volcanic rock formed by ejection from a volcano as a molten blob that cools in the air into discrete grains called clasts. It is riddled with macroscopic ellipsoidal vesicles, gas bubbles that give it a low density, though unlike pumice it typically sinks in water.
