A volcanic rock of extremely vesicular rough-textured volcanic glass, typically light colored, with a porosity of 64 to 85 percent by volume. It floats on water, sometimes for years, until it becomes waterlogged and sinks, and pumice rafts from underwater eruptions can be a hazard for ships. Its dark, denser cousin with larger vesicles is scoria.
