Kimberlite is an igneous rock and a rare variant of peridotite, best known as the main host matrix for diamonds. It forms deep within Earth's mantle, at depths between one hundred fifty and four hundred fifty kilometers, and erupts rapidly and violently through volcanic pipes, carrying diamonds up from the mantle to the surface.
