Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock formed as layers called coal seams. It originates in ancient wetlands called coal forests, where plant matter that fell into the water was protected from oxidation and biodegradation, then compressed and hardened by the heat and pressure of deep burial over millions of years into peat, then coal.
