The Lake Erie Islands are a chain of archipelagic islands in Lake Erie, geologically formed from the Silurian-age Columbus Limestone. When Pleistocene ice sheets carved out the Lake Erie basin, this harder limestone resisted erosion better than the shale to the east, leaving the islands standing above the lake's shallower western end.
