Thimble Islands

The Thimble Islands are an archipelago of more than one hundred small islands and rocks in Long Island Sound, near Stony Creek in the town of Branford, Connecticut. The islands were known to the Mattabeseck people as Kuttomquosh, meaning the beautiful sea rocks. They are built of pink Stony Creek granite and represent the tops of hills that stood above the surrounding land before the last ice age, which makes them more stable than most other islands in Long Island Sound, many of which are terminal moraines of rubble left by retreating glaciers.
