Bla Jungfrun

Bla Jungfrun is a small granite island in the Kalmar Strait of the Baltic Sea, between mainland Sweden and the island of Oland, rising to a mean height of about 86 meters across an area of less than one square kilometer. The island is an ancient inselberg of Precambrian granite that was later buried beneath a cover of sandstone, which protected it from further erosion until that cover was itself stripped away in comparatively recent geological time, exposing the smoothed granite beneath. Long associated with folklore about witches gathering there, the island's granite was quarried between 1904 and 1925 before it was protected as one of Sweden's earliest national parks.
