Severnaya Zemlya is a roughly 37,000 square kilometer archipelago in the Russian high Arctic, lying off the Taymyr Peninsula in Siberia and separating the Kara Sea from the Laptev Sea. It was the last major archipelago on Earth to be discovered, first sighted in 1913 and not fully mapped until 1930 to 1932, and consists of four main islands, October Revolution, Bolshevik, Komsomolets and Pioneer, plus roughly 70 smaller islands. The archipelago has no permanent population apart from a single polar research station, and its bedrock is dominated by Neoproterozoic and Palaeozoic sedimentary successions.
