Riau Archipelago

The Riau Archipelago is a geographic term for the core island group within Indonesia's Riau Islands Province, distinct from the province itself, lying south of Singapore and east of Riau on the island of Sumatra. In Indonesian the name Kepulauan Riau covers both the archipelago and the surrounding province, and the acronym BBK, for Batam, Bintan and Karimun, is sometimes used for the archipelago. Its main islands are Batam, Rempang, Galang, Bintan, Combol, Kundur and Karimun, with the provincial capital Tanjung Pinang on Bintan Island, and Tanjung Pinang and Tanjung Balai Karimun serving as international ports. The archipelago was historically part of a succession of regional sultanates and colonial holdings before its present administrative organization.
