Pratas Island, also known as Tungsha or Dongsha, is a coral island in the northern South China Sea administered by Taiwan's Kaohsiung City as part of Cijin District, roughly 170 nautical miles southeast of Hong Kong. It is the only landmass rising above water within the wider Pratas Islands group, covering about 240 hectares including a 64 hectare central lagoon, which makes it the largest of the South China Sea Islands, and it sits on the crescent-shaped western rim of the larger Pratas Atoll alongside the submerged North and South Vereker Banks. The island and its surrounding waters are also claimed by the People's Republic of China as part of Guangdong province, making it a subject of ongoing territorial dispute.
