Dahlak Archipelago

The Dahlak Archipelago is a group of islands belonging to Eritrea in the Red Sea, about 58 kilometers east of the port city of Massawa. It covers roughly 643 square kilometers and consists of two larger islands and 124 smaller ones, of which only three are permanently inhabited, Dahlak Kebir being the largest and home to most of the archipelago population of about 3,000. The islanders speak Dahalik, a distinct language. The archipelago is recognized as an Important Bird Area and supports significant marine life, including coral reefs, seabirds, dolphins and dugongs.
