An islet is a small island, generally very small, often unnamed, and typically without enough vegetation or land to support human habitation. It may be made of rock, sand or hard coral, may be a permanent landform or only a tidal one such as a reef or seamount that surfaces at low tide, and can occur in seas, lakes, rivers or other sizeable bodies of water. Every islet is technically an island, but the word specifically marks out the smaller, uninhabitable end of that range, with no fixed size cutoff separating an islet from a larger island; the word itself comes from the Old French islette, a diminutive of isle, reflecting the emphasis on smallness rather than any precise measurement.
