The Zhongsha Islands are a Chinese term for a cluster of largely submerged banks, seamounts and shoals in the South China Sea, principally the Macclesfield Bank and the separate Scarborough Shoal, which together contain no permanently dry islands of their own. The area is claimed by the People's Republic of China, the Republic of China and, for its eastern portions, the Philippines, with no single country in constant control of the whole region.
