The Mokohinau Islands are a small group of islands off the northeast coast of New Zealand's North Island, about 100 kilometers northeast of Auckland, 21 kilometers northwest of Great Barrier Island, and roughly 52 kilometers east of Bream Head. The group's main islands include Fanal Island, Burgess Island, Flax Island and Atihau Island, plus smaller islands such as Bird Rock, and together they cover a total land area of about 160 hectares. Most of the group is managed by the Department of Conservation as nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries, and landing without a permit is not allowed except on part of Burgess Island.
