Ulsanbawi Rock

Inselbergs and Crystalline Monoliths

Ulsanbawi, or Ulsan Rock, is a six-peaked rock formation in Seoraksan National Park near Sokcho, Gangwon Province, South Korea, one of the park's primary attractions. It is composed of Daebo granite, the same rock that makes up Seoraksan mountain, shaped by differential erosion and weathering along the granite's natural facies; because it has fewer cracks than the surrounding rock, it has worn away more slowly, leaving it standing prominently. The rock rises to 874 meters above sea level, roughly 600 meters above the park entrance, standing about 200 meters tall with steep slopes and a circumference of 4 kilometers, its cliffs forming a folding-screen shape on all sides with nearly vertical precipices and five crock-shaped holes; smaller-scale weathering at its base has produced tafoni and tor formations. Ulsanbawi inspired numerous poems and travel essays from Joseon Dynasty scholars and features in Korean Buddhist folklore. This entity documents Ulsanbawi Rock specifically as a geological formation, a six-peaked granite mass in Seoraksan shaped by differential weathering along its rock facies.
