Anorthosite

Igneous Rocks

Anorthosite is a coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock characterized by its composition: mostly plagioclase feldspar at ninety to one hundred percent, with a minimal mafic component of zero to ten percent. It forms through density separation, as plagioclase crystals, being less dense than magma, float to the top of a magma chamber and concentrate there as they crystallize. However, some Proterozoic anorthosite bodies have large amounts of labradorite, which is quarried for its value as both a gemstone and a building material.
