Canyons, the deep steep-sided clefts cut into rock by rivers, including slot canyons, river canyons and the great canyons of the American Southwest, South America, Africa and Asia. A canyon forms where a river or stream cuts down faster than the walls can wear back, usually through layered sandstone, limestone or lava, and the walls often show the rock layers like pages of a book. A landform belongs here when its cited article calls it a canyon.
