The Zhangjiajie sandstone pillars are a dense field of thousands of tall, narrow rock columns, some exceeding 200 meters, within the Wulingyuan Scenic Area of Hunan Province, China. They are carved from a Devonian-age quartz sandstone roughly 380 million years old that was tectonically uplifted and then dissected, primarily by physical weathering along vertical joints, including frost wedging and root action, rather than by the chemical dissolution that shapes true karst terrain, leaving a densely packed "stone forest" of freestanding pillars separated by narrow ravines. The formation's striking silhouettes, often shrouded in mist, are widely reported to have inspired the floating "Hallelujah Mountains" of the film Avatar, and the area was inscribed as part of the Wulingyuan UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.
