The Zagros Mountains are a major fold and thrust mountain belt stretching roughly one thousand five hundred kilometers from northwestern Iran through southeastern Iraq toward the Strait of Hormuz. The range formed, and continues to form, through the ongoing collision of the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which has folded and thrust thick layers of sedimentary rock into long, parallel ridges. The foothills of the Zagros hold some of the largest oil and gas reserves in the Middle East, trapped within the range's folded rock structures.
