The Yarlung Valley is formed by the Yarlung Chu, a tributary of the Tsangpo River, in the Shannan Prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The name refers especially to the district where the Yarlung Chu joins the Chongye River and broadens into a plain about 2 kilometers wide before flowing into the Tsangpo, and it includes Tsetang, one of Tibet's largest cities, 183 kilometers southeast of Lhasa. Originally well forested and suited to agriculture, the valley and the adjoining Chongye Valley formed the original seat of the Yarlung dynasty of Tibetan kings, until the first Tibetan emperor, Songtsen Gampo, moved the capital to Lhasa.
