Yapahuwa is a massive granite rock in Sri Lanka's North Western Province, positioned roughly midway between Kurunegala and Anuradhapura. The granite outcrop rises abruptly to a height of nearly a hundred meters above the surrounding lowlands, forming a striking landmark on an otherwise flat plain. It is one of several granite boulders and hills scattered across this part of Sri Lanka's dry zone, many of which were historically adapted as Buddhist monastic sites. Yapahuwa itself is best known for the fortified royal complex later built on and around it, but the rock formation itself is a natural granite monolith of the kind found at several other sites in the same region.
